Submission guidelines
Submission
Manuscript submission to the journal must be managed through the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. Interested authors must register using the following link or simply log in through the same platform to upload their manuscripts and the documents required for submission (Author Commitment Letter, Conflict of Interest Disclosure, and Copyright Transfer Agreement):
https://ojs.dimar.mil.co/index.php/CIOH/about/submissions
Manuscripts submitted by email are not accepted and will not be processed through this means. Authors may contact the journal by email if they experience any problems uploading files to the platform so that the Editorial Office may resolve the issue.
Originality
The journal publishes original works that have not been previously disseminated in other journals or by other publishers, and whose publication rights are not otherwise committed. Authors should refrain from submitting articles that have already been published through other formal means.
The only exception to prior publication accepted by the journal is preprints. If an author has previously published a preprint, this must be properly disclosed to the journal at the time of submission, providing complete and transparent information regarding its publication. Likewise, if the manuscript is derived from an undergraduate or graduate thesis deposited in an open-access repository, the author must also disclose this information so that it may be taken into account during the evaluation process and the subsequent transformation of the manuscript after peer review.
Likewise, the unauthorized use of material originating from other sources, including previously published texts, images, or graphics, is not permitted. Authors are urged to exercise due care to avoid copyright infringement and to refrain from using copyrighted works without permission, with particular attention to images, figures, and tables, as such works are not covered by the right of quotation (merely citing the original source is not sufficient).
Similarity with Other Sources (Plagiarism Detection Software)
Once manuscripts have met the documentary requirements to enter the review process, they will be evaluated using plagiarism detection software. This tool will help identify similarities or potential improper use of material from other sources. If any concerns are identified, authors will be required to provide clarifications or make the necessary corrections; otherwise, the manuscript may be rejected on the grounds of lack of originality or improper use of works protected by copyright.
Prior Publication
The journal supports open science practices and therefore allows the prior publication of manuscripts as preprints in subject-specific or open-access repositories for dissemination purposes. However, if a manuscript has previously been published as a preprint, the authors must notify the journal and provide the details of its location (DOI, URL) corresponding to that non-peer-reviewed version.
All such information, together with the authors' transparency in reporting it, is essential for proper consideration during the manuscript review process.
Simultaneous Submissions and Ethics
Authors must declare in the Author Commitment Letter that the manuscript has not been submitted simultaneously to another journal or publisher for publication. Authors must await the journal's decision before submitting the manuscript elsewhere if it is rejected.
In addition, authors must certify that the manuscript has been prepared in accordance with ethical standards, respecting copyright and adhering to the principles of scientific integrity. Any misconduct in this regard shall constitute grounds for rejection by the journal or may result in the retraction of the published article.
Digital Identity (Authors and Institutions)
ORCID registration is mandatory for all authors. Boletín Científico CIOH will not process manuscripts submitted by authors who are not registered with ORCID. Registration may be completed through the following link:
Within the ORCID profile, Boletín Científico CIOH requires that three fields be completed and made publicly available: institutional affiliation, academic degrees, and publications.
In addition, authors must provide the Research Organization Registry (ROR) identifier of the institution(s) with which they are affiliated, by which they are employed, or that are involved in funding the research from which the manuscript is derived. The ROR may be consulted at:
Authorship
According to the authorship criteria established by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), to which the journal adheres through its publication ethics policy, an author must meet all four of the following criteria:
- Make substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work, or to the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data.
- Participate in drafting the manuscript or revising it critically for important intellectual content.
- Approve the final version of the work to be submitted for publication.
- Accept responsibility for the entire content of the work and be able to answer questions related to its accuracy or integrity.
Authors must be familiar with and comply with these criteria before submitting a manuscript in order to avoid the inclusion of individuals who do not meet the authorship requirements or the exclusion of those who do.
Authorship disputes or an inadequate understanding of these criteria may constitute grounds for rejection of the manuscript if any form of misconduct in this regard is identified during the editorial process.
Corresponding Author
When a manuscript has more than one author, a corresponding author must be designated. The corresponding author will be responsible for maintaining communication with the journal throughout all stages of the publication process, including editorial review, peer review, substantive and formal revisions, production preparation, copyediting, design and layout, as well as post-publication follow-up.
The corresponding author must provide their unique bibliographic name, ORCID iD, current institutional affiliation, email address, and an institutional (not personal) mailing address, using the appropriate street nomenclature, including the city and country.
Institutional Affiliation
All authors of a manuscript must declare their institutional affiliation, which may include the specific academic unit (e.g., department, faculty, or school), the name of the main institution (such as a university or research center), the city, the country, and, preferably, an institutional email address.
If authors wish to include more than one institutional affiliation, they may do so. Each affiliation must be identified with a superscript number, and when several authors share the same affiliation, the corresponding number must be assigned to each of them. For example:
John Smith¹,², Sandra Pérez², Laura Jones³, Michael Rodriguez¹,³
¹ First affiliation, city and country.
² Second affiliation, city and country.
³ Third affiliation, city and country.
Nevertheless, authors are encouraged, whenever possible, to select only one primary affiliation, particularly the one that is directly related to the manuscript, such as the institution that funded the research project from which the work is derived.
If an author wishes to change their institutional affiliation after the manuscript has been submitted, they must provide a letter explaining the reasons for the requested change. This letter must be supported by a legal representative or an authorized official of the former institution, confirming that no proprietary rights are affected through any specific project or source of funding.
Each request to change an institutional affiliation will be reviewed individually by the journal, which will make the final decision. Failure to provide adequate justification for the requested change may prevent publication of the manuscript.
Open Access
The journal adheres to the open access movement and to the principles of the Budapest Open Access Initiative (2002), together with its subsequent updates (BOAI10, BOAI15, and BOAI20), which seek to ensure that peer-reviewed scientific knowledge is made freely available to users and readers through the Internet, thereby contributing to the advancement of science, the dissemination of knowledge, and the solution of the challenges faced by humanity across its diverse societies and cultures.
The following sections describe the journal's policies regarding funding, copyright, access to published content, and digital preservation, in accordance with the principles of open access and open science.
Author Fees and Access
Boletín Científico CIOH does not charge authors any fees at any stage of the publication process. Publication in the journal is completely free of charge, and no Article Processing Charges (APCs) are applied.
Furthermore, the journal does not impose embargo periods. All accepted articles are made immediately available in open access under the Diamond Open Access model, with funding provided by the Dirección General Marítima (DIMAR).
Copyright and Creative Commons Licenses
Authors transfer the economic copyright of accepted manuscripts to the journal and to the Dirección General Marítima (DIMAR). However, authors may reuse their work for professional, educational, academic, or scientific purposes in accordance with the terms of the license under which the journal publishes all of its articles.
All articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution–NonCommercial–NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) license.
Self-Archiving
Boletín Científico CIOH allows authors to self-archive their manuscripts both as preprints (prior to peer review) and as the final published version of the article.
However, whenever the published article is deposited or self-archived in any repository or other platform, authors are requested to include the complete bibliographic reference together with its corresponding Digital Object Identifier (DOI) so that readers may access the official published version directly through the journal's website if they wish.
Digital Preservation
The journal and the Dirección General Marítima (DIMAR) guarantee the long-term preservation of all published content, ensuring that issues and volumes remain retrievable and accessible even if the editorial project were to cease publication. This preservation is carried out in accordance with information security policies and the maintenance of the journal's electronic platforms.
The volumes, issues, and articles published by Boletín Científico CIOH form part of the nation's intellectual heritage, contributing to the validation, dissemination, and preservation of knowledge across different disciplines.
The journal's issues and volumes are included in the international digital preservation program of the PKP Preservation Network. For further information:

The abstract must follow the same structure and must not exceed 250 words, excluding the title, headings, and keywords.
Reflection Articles
These manuscripts provide an in-depth discussion or theoretical reflection on a particular topic based on relevant literature.
The structure must include: Introduction (background and purpose), Reflection (with sections at the author's discretion), and Conclusions. The maximum length is six thousand (6,000) words, excluding references and metadata.
The abstract must follow the same structure, with a maximum length of 250 words, excluding the title, headings, and keywords.
Letters to the Editor
Letters to the Editor are brief communications that discuss or comment on papers published in the journal or address current issues of interest to the scientific community within the journal's scope. Their maximum length is one thousand five hundred (1,500) words, and they do not require an abstract.

Manuscript Languages
The journal accepts full-length articles written in Spanish, English, and Portuguese.
Graphical Elements of Manuscripts
Authors should consider the following guidelines regarding the graphical elements included in their manuscripts.
Titles, Sources, and Permission for Use
All tables and figures must include a clear title and indicate their source. In addition, any table, figure, or image originating from a copyright-protected source must have the appropriate authorization for its use, as the right of quotation does not apply to these graphical elements. Such right covers only excerpts of works and not an entire work, and a figure, image, or photograph is considered a work in itself. Failure to comply with this requirement or the inclusion of graphical elements without the appropriate authorization may result in rejection of the manuscript.
Furthermore, every image, illustration, or graphical element that is not a table shall be designated as a figure. In addition, every table or figure must be explicitly cited within the body of the manuscript. If a table or figure is not mentioned in the text, it will be considered an error and will be removed from the manuscript.
Preparation of Tables and Figures
Authors are encouraged to prepare their own tables and figures for inclusion in the manuscript. If graphical elements from other sources are used, authors must obtain the necessary permissions and submit them together with detailed information regarding any restrictions on their use or reproduction, bearing in mind that the journal publishes its contents under a specific Creative Commons license.
Number of Tables and Figures
The recommended maximum number of tables and figures per manuscript is twelve (12), in the proportion required by the work. If a larger number is necessary, authors must provide the Editor with a justification explaining the relevance of such material to the manuscript.
Authors should bear in mind that tables and figures are intended to explain, support, or reinforce the evidence or arguments presented in the manuscript. The inclusion of purely decorative images is not permitted.
Citation Style
The journal follows the APA Style (7th edition) for in-text citations and for the formatting of references in the reference list at the end of the manuscript. All sources cited in the text must appear in the reference list, and conversely, every source included in the reference list must be cited in the text.
The complete citation guidelines are available at:
https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/index.html
Examples of citation formats, including the required bibliographic information and the structure of each reference for different source types, are provided below (authors are requested to pay particular attention to the use of typographical conventions such as italics).
