Monitoreo de residuos sólidos flotantes (basuras) en el Caribe colombiano 1990-1992

Marine Debris and the problem related to them seems to be affecting the whole population. In recent years, the deposition of non-biodegradable plastics together with other debris and waste are representing a serious danger to the marine life and also to the navigation, especial near the coastline.
The CIOH of the ARC, within (he activities of the CEPPOL program, promoted by COI/PNUMA since 1990, is carrying out the monitoring solid floating debris (garbaje) that arrive to the Caribbean beaches. This activity is developed in colaboration with Mexico and Puerto Rico, as a pilot study for the Caribbean region. The results show a notice able increment of the plastic non-biodegradable wastes in the Colombian Caribbean, representing about 60% of the total solid floting waste that reach the beaches.
