La Ciénaga de Juan Polo is a coastal lagoon, located at the north of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, connected with La Ciénaga de Tesca lagoon and the Caribbean, through a natural mouth in the past, but implementing tidal-regulated gates (Bocana Estabilizada) from the present century. The Bocana's function is the renewal of polluted lagoon waters. Being controlled almost exclusively by tides, some zones far from the Bocana, especially, Ciénaga de Juan Polo, suffer an increase in salinity during the dry season of year, together with mangrove mortality and ecosystem deterioration. The process of increase in salinity and its principal factors are studied in the present paper, applying 3D hydrodynamic modelling and analytical mathematical analysis of the salt budget. Three time scales have been found, corresponding on the three processes: tides, local evaporation and turbulent salt diffusion. The last one results to be important to stabilize the system in its actual state. An alternative is recommended for the solution of the increase in salinity, with the opening of a second Bocana, reestablishing an existing channel which functioned before 1960's.Downloads
