Tesoro island coral reefs were studied and charlographied by aereal and submerged methods. Toward differents reef areas transects and maps of the bottom composition and topography were made. Five zones shows the reef. The lagoon zone a short sand flat (1-4m depth) on leeward side, with some sea grass Syringodium, and Miliepora annularis patch reefs. The back reef, at wind ward shows sand grooves, rubble accumulation and pavement arcas in shallow waters (0.5-17.5m), with Porites astreoides and Porites porites dominance; toward leeward (4-7m) shows massive Millepora annularis and dead Acropora cervicornis areas on sand bottom.The crest, on the breaker zone (0.2-2m) with Millepora-Palvthoa. The inner fore reef (2-9m), with dead monospecific stands of Acropora palmata and Acropora cerviconis, a low gorgonian diversity, and Lobophora variegata abundance.The reefs shows wave and sedimentation influence. The buttresses absent in the fore reef, and 1.10 development toward low wave energy areas were found as Tesoro reef´s characteristics.Downloads
