Abstract

The North Coast of Colombia is exposed annually to extreme waves produced by hurricanes (June to November) and of the increment of the Alisios winds during the month of December until March. The swell and these a level under these conditions, reach values dangerous to the people and to the coastal infrastructure. The primary objective of this study is based on evaluating, to preliminary level, the exposition of the coastal zone of the Department of the Atlántico to wave impact produced by the extreme winds of a hurricane 1,3 and 5 according to the Saffir-Simpson scale.

To generate the winds field we use the JHURWIN of Visbal J. and Ortiz J C model of hurricanes based on the model HURWIN and the parameterization of Willough by. The SWAN model, was used for the wave propagation. The results show how, due to the fetch, waves up to 20 meters are generated in deep water, but great part of its energy dissipates before arriving in the coast due to the geomorphology of the continental shelf of the area of study, the slope and the geometry of the coastline in the Caribbean Coast.
