Abstract

Coastal lagoons are susceptible to water quality problems due to environmental and anthropogenic factors. Playa Blanca -Isla Barú, is located in a natural park, it is also one of the main tourist attractions of Cartagena, in which many locals sustain their economic income. During the dry season of 2016, sampling was carried out in four coastal lagoons of the Island, to determine the trophic state index or TSI (“Trophic State Index”) based on the concentration of Chlorophyll-a and to evaluate the water quality. For the sampling stations, physicochemical parameters were measured (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH) and biological parameters were evaluated (phytoplankton, fecal coliforms, E. coli, photosynthetic pigments). High concentrations of chlorophyll-a were recorded (2.225 – 640.800 mg/m3) associated with a high density of phytoplanktonic organisms, particularly Synechococcus sp. indicating microalgal flowering. In general, all the lagoons recorded low concentrations of dissolved oxygen (0.01 - 4.51 mg/L) and high salinity (47.10 - 171.00). The microbiological parameters exceeded the permissible limits according to national regulations (Decree 1594 of 1984) indicating low water quality. The TSI values recorded to correspond to lagoons that are between mesotrophic state (33.33) and hypereutrophic (95.13). The study concluded that the lagoons were found under eutrophication processes, being more evident the environmental deterioration in those lagoons categorized as hypertrophic and eutrophic.
