Abstract

Monthly treated data from the NODC (National *CIOH Oceanographic Data Center), NOAA, about the hydrological fields (temperature and salinity) and the momentum and heat fluxes with 1º and 0.5º resolution, respectively, are utilized as the initial and boundary conditions, respectively, in the Ocean Prediction System of DIMAR (SPOD); the last one is based on the POM (Princeton Ocean Model; Mellor, 1993).

The resultant model fields are monthly averaged hydrological patterns (T - S) and current fields, hydrodynamically and mutually adjusted, with batimetry (ETOPO-5 data) and atmosphere-sea interaction conditions. The model results are used for the aims of: 1) the hydrodynamic diagnostics of the annual cycle; 2) the “hot-starts” of the SPOD in the operational mode; 3) a salinity “background” establishment, not detected directly from remote sensors, and 4) the boundary condition specifications for local area model operations (coastal zones).

A strategy of the accumulation and utilization of this information, as well as the involving of the national Colombian data is proposed; a reference to possible interdisciplinary studies, base on those data, is done.
